My Children Sold My House Behind My Back—But They Forgot to Check Who Held the Mortgage

PART 4

The name Paul gave me was Richard Hale.

For nearly twenty years, I had not heard that name spoken aloud.

Richard had once been Frank’s business partner. They had invested in a small property development company together in the early 2000s, and when the business collapsed, Frank lost nearly everything he had put into it. Richard disappeared shortly afterward, leaving Frank to deal with the creditors, the lawsuits, and the humiliation.

Frank eventually recovered, but he never forgave Richard.

“What does Richard want?” I asked.

“I don’t know,” Paul replied. “He called Denise after seeing the listing. He said he might be interested in buying the house himself.”

I closed my eyes.

“Tell your sister not to speak to him again until we know what he wants.”

“Mom, there’s more.”

“Of course there is.”

“He said he knows about the mortgage.”

My stomach tightened.

“How?”

“He wouldn’t explain. He just said that if the house was really being sold, he wanted to speak with the person who holds the note.”

I stared at the wall.

Then I understood.

Richard hadn’t called because he wanted my house.

He had called because he knew exactly what that mortgage represented.

And if he knew about it, there was a possibility that someone else knew, too.

“Paul,” I said carefully, “did you tell him anything about the money you owe?”

“No.”

“Did Denise?”

“I don’t think so.”

“Then don’t tell him anything else. Do you understand?”

“Yes.”

I ended the call and immediately contacted Eleanor.

When I told her Richard Hale’s name, she grew unusually quiet.

“Margaret,” she said, “I think we need to meet first thing tomorrow. And I’d like you to bring every document you have concerning the mortgage.”

“I will.”

“There’s something I want to check before we discuss this further.”

“What is it?”

“The identity of the current beneficiary and the history of the secured loan. If Richard has somehow obtained information about your private arrangement, we need to understand how.”

That night, I barely slept.

I lay in bed listening to the wind move through the branches outside my window. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the real estate sign in my front yard.

I thought about Paul and Denise.

I thought about Frank.

And I thought about Richard Hale, the man my husband had once trusted enough to put his entire savings into a business.

By sunrise, I had made a decision.

Whatever happened next, I would not allow fear, guilt, or family pressure to make my decisions for me.

I had spent too many years putting everyone else first.

That morning, it was my turn.
