PART 4
For the first time in eight years, I realized I might not have known the woman I married.
Clare was still crying on the other end of the phone.
I could hear her breathing unevenly, occasionally whispering my name as if saying it enough times might somehow undo what had happened.
But I wasn’t thinking about our marriage anymore.
I was looking at a document bearing my forged signature.
A document that attempted to transfer controlling ownership of a company I had spent twelve years building.
And the man listed as the proposed controlling representative was my father-in-law.
Martin Collins.
“Clare,” I said quietly, “I need you to answer one question.”
“I know.”
“Did you know your father intended to take ownership of my company?”
She didn’t respond.
“Clare?”
“Yes.”
The answer came out so softly I almost didn’t hear it.
I sat down.
“How long?”
“Since October.”
I stared at the document.
“October?”
“Daniel, please let me explain.”
“Four months?”
She began sobbing.
“Martin said he had a plan. He said the company was worth much more than you admitted. He said you had deliberately kept me away from the financial records because you wanted to divorce me without giving me anything.”
